CONNECTICUT STATE MEET

Ridgefield Boys, Greenwich Girls Win State Open Team Titles

By Mary Albl of DyeStat

In the deep history of Connecticut running, the Ridgefield High Tigers are establishing themselves as one of the best. On Monday at Wickham Park in Manchester, the Ridgefield boys scored 60 points to claim the State Open championship, their second title in three years.

The Tigers were led by Princeton-bound senior Steven Hergenrother, who covered the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 32 seconds, winning the title for the second straight year. Newtown junior Soheib Dissa finished second in 15:37.

Hergenrother’s time tied Glastonbury’s Donn Cabral as the 15th-fastest on the course. Ridgefield, which finished with four runners in the top 30, avenged its loss to Danbury a week earlier at the Class LL divisional meet. Danbury was second on Monday with 74 points, while Xavier was third (140 points).

On the girls side, Greenwich dominated the team race, scoring 95 points to win the program’s second Open title. Greenwich placed three runners in the top 26, with Esme Dapple the top finisher in 10th (19:06). The girls individual winner was Newington senior Katherine Bohlke in 18:16. Second place was Brooke Strauss of Glastonbury in 18:36, while Conard twins, Tess Sherry (18:40) and Liv Sherry (18:45) finished 3-4.

Monday’s State Open was originally scheduled for last Friday, Nov. 3, but was postponed due to weather that caused the Class LL meet to be rescheduled to Tuesday. Next up for the top 25 individuals and top six teams is the New England Championships on Saturday in Belfast, Maine.
